The thrum of the city of London and its Shoreditch basements, ironic facial hair and beers in pint glasses has been traded in once again this year for the more relaxed pastoral environs of the Winterwell festival where beer comes in plastic cups and people dress as chess pieces and monopoly hotels without a shred of irony. Rain clouds passed over the Gloucestershire site shedding their malicious droplets all weekend but the atmosphere remained buoyant with festival goers keen to take in all the musical variety on offer. Chief amongst this year's line-up was The Music League's final three acts: All Too Animal, Paul Child Band and The Promenade. Bumped up to the main stage for 2011 all three finalists do themselves justice. All Too Animal fit right in with the carnival styling of Saturday afternoon at Winterwell, the Paul Child Band's music chimes with the rest of the festival programme and The Promenade are able to cut through all the bullshit and just play. The first act to take part is the go-go giraffe costume clad All Too Animal, clearly in their element. Their songs are filled with cute witticisms and few revellers can resist raising a smile to the fantastic 'Apes with Rollerskates'. The rain unkindly emerges for the Paul Child Band but their electric folk rock shot through with violin fits in so well with the festival mood that it takes no time at all for the crowd to get involved. The final act of this year's contest is The Promenade who bring a touch of urban tension to the green grass of Winterwell. Cheered on by their fellow Strummerville alumni and Music League veterans Nimmo and the Gauntletts they get straight down to the business of delivering their three songs of angular indie. Before you know it everyone has said their piece. The final act of direct democracy sees punters line up in front of their favourite act in semi-orderly queues whilst the wee moustachioed fella from the Monopoly board game counts the votes. The totalling process revealed All Too Animal to be the winners rewarded, not with a tall tree to graze from, but a slot at the 1234 Festival back in familiar Shoreditch. Good job young, enthusiastic pop chaps. Unbelievably, that is another year of The Music League done and a thoroughly enjoyable experience it has been too.
